Ah. The A-10. Possibly the most controversial of aircraft!
I am in the camp that it has more psychological benefit that actual combat efficacy compared to stand-off platforms. Even more so if the enemy has any significant AA.

The end of True Lies is what made the Harrier uncool in my eyes. “Oh great, now they’re trying to make the Harrier A Thing. That makes it lame.”

Even more so if the enemy has any significant AA. I always loved the A-10. Apparently I’m not alone as it is one of the most meme’d planes around. “The A-10 doesn’t fly; it stares down gravity until it runs away sobbing” and so on. I don’t know if it’s true, but one of those old shows claimed Iraqis would jump out of their tanks if they heard an A-10 approaching. So, the psychological value might be all it needs.

I don’t know if it’s true, but one of those old shows claimed Iraqis would jump out of their tanks if they heard an A-10 approaching. So, the psychological value might be all it needs. It is definitely a cool plane. I think it has a real pugnacious visual appeal, which has helped it greatly I'm sure. I have often encountered that infantry love the A-10. They are being attacked, and this badass aircraft blasts in, offloads a chunk of ordnance, and visibly floats around for awhile. I can see why that is a big morale booster and why it is a popular plane. I have generally seen that airforce folks are much less fond. It has a long loiter time, but that is offset by its slow speed. It is survivable when hit, but not as survivable as a plane that spends less time in the AA engagement window and isn't hit at all. It actually doesn't carry that big a payload for its size. It is a real maintenance hog, which is exacerbated by it often receiving battle damage that needs to be repaired. On top of that, it isn't that effective at delivering much of its firepower. The gatling cannon in particular is largely obsolete. It is also very vulnerable to modern AA- they probably would be shot down very quickly in an environment like Ukraine, for example. Basically, I get the impression it is not very efficient at its job, and you get much more effect on target and more versatility with an equivalent number of fast strike jets launching stand-off munitions. Also only an option where enemy air defenses are poor or it gets forced to use stand-off munitions and becomes straight worse than a fast strike jet. BUT the troops on the ground don't see the fast jets several miles away, even if they did successfully interdict the enemy column about to attack your position. It doesn't have the same morale effect and it certainly doesn't capture the public imagination. If I remember correctly, one of the groups within the US military that always fights to keep the A-10 in service is recruitment or PR.

Well I'm going to fly the flag for the Harrier - purely on the basis that my grandad helped build them...

I suppose that means I should stan for the Globetrotter since both my parents worked on that. But no one thinks the Globetrotter is sexy.

So, what subgenre would you call this? Death Metal? Screamo? I’m not up in whatever the kids are into. Kind of bummed you have a song titled “ratlicker” without a line about how “despite all my liquor rage, I’m still just a”…you see where I’m going.

It's grindcore - most like people like Napalm Death, Rotten Sound, Pig Destroyer etc

Not a very picture quality Hobby, but I have been working on a few wargame rules and RPG modules. Basic technical writing with a dash of creative prose. I have been doing this for 10-15 years and have several projects under my belt. I make a decent side hustle that supports my wargame hobby from it.
However, for the past 6-9 months it has been like trying to push a rock uphill against the wind through molasses while wearing ice skates. Just a real grind and super cludge-y. My usual techniques to deal with this is to just grind it out anyway, and I have been. Normally, this works pretty well and eventually the brain fog and cludge-y-ness of the process lifts and I hit the sweet spot.
I also can't stop coming up with games and mechanics to execute the games. I literally dream about it. Some of my best game mechanics (not concepts) have come from dreams! I can't write them fast enough! My concept notebooks are literally overflowing.
However, I have simply not hit that sweet spot for the past 6-8 months. I have been working through and on projects, but every page, paragraph, sentence, and even key stroke has been a chore. I have not lost enthusiasm for the projects, but the process has been really challenging lately. I still manage to write but it has not been easy and most of the writing has not even been good.
Not really looking for advice or anything but just wanted to share my feelings somewhere with people who are also wargamers at least.

I think this comes under crafts... Moved into a new house and been doing a butt ton of DIY to make it less old person and work for us. Which means I am now aware of a bunch of muscles I'd forgotten about and live in a sea of boxes and detritus... DIY is pretty fun in small doses, although I am thoroughly fed up of painting. Also, I don't understand the obsession with wallpaper. Houses are not onions, they don't need thirty layers of shite I now have to scrape off. Laying floors is great though, got a fresh laminate floor down in the bedroom Anyone else engaged in a bit of DIY?
