I assume the point of the private company is so they can just ban what They want to van without public oversite. This is one of the stated reasons, as well as breaking a union of public employees. And, of course, to send lots of public money to a company that employs a previous (and connected) HB mayor.
Yep. And then once the decline in quality of service inevitably results in less use the new owner can use it as justification for closing the libraries and selling the land to their developer buddies.

Huntington Beach is back in the news (and apparently mentioned by John Oliver?). It seems city officials began pulling books out of the library before a committee could be formed or voted on. The head librarian quit after receiving lots of abuse from the vocal right and no support from city government. Just a real shitshow. voiceofoc.org/2024/05/are-public-librarians-gearing-up-to-leave-huntington-beach/

Given these vocal book banners are unlikely to have actually been in the library*, what's stopping the librarians telling them that all these books have been banned and just forgetting to remove them from the shelves?
*I bet they can't work the dewey-decimal system either.

The Huntington Beach library is a big, beautiful library with a cafe located on the edge of Hungtinton Central Park and shares a parking lot with a series of baseball and soccer fields. It is one of the best and most popular libraries in northern Orange County if not all of OC. There’s a pretty good chance the book banners do step in after a day of sports or activity, unlike with most libraries.
It also has/had a lot more book readings and events than any other library I’ve been to, except possibly Irvine (because of the university and all the retirees).

I think the librarian quitting is a net-win for the book banners and the lack of local government support to the librarian was intentional to gain this result.

Yeah, I didn’t understand why she was trying to threaten them with a good time. To me it sounded like she was warning them that their tactics were working. Still, there are huge protests in downtown HB and at the pier, so the public is on her side.

Colbert just did a report on the book banning and they’re issuing complaints and death threats over books the library doesn’t even have.
