Ah. Finally beat the damn game after much off-and-on gaming.

Check out the second wave options. Steer clear of the "random weapon damage" option; what this really means is "all your shots do 1 point of damage". The Long Campaign increases the costs of everything by a LOT, and I've lost about five countries so far. SLOWWWWW.
This is one of the games where it's not about the destination, it's about the journey.
