The Campaign thread about RPGs has an interesting start with some vaguely Misogynistic overtones about the evolution of RPGs.
I am interested to see where that goes.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who noticed the "only sheeple listen to fire alarms" take in the weird hobby events thread...
Mad.

Would anyone versed in the Spanish civil war mind weighing in on how much revision there is in the “Spanish fascism was a good thing” thread? I know the one guy wrote a book, but I don’t find that as a convincing argument in itself.

I have no idea myself. I am interested in any info too.
It is entirely possible Franco was an effective military commander, but something about the way the posts are in that thread is giving me... uncomfortable vibes.

Yeah, I’m not as concerned with Franco’s generalship.
I felt some of those vibes, too, and more vibes from some of the book reviews. But I’m not familiar with the subject other than some light skimming of Wikipedia and Beevor’s book.

...wait, I'm looking at the book this guy has linked to and... is it self-published?

aaaaand stuff like that parting shot from that napoleon guy is exactly why I don't fuck with dakka anymore. I bet if someone posted General Paulus or Rommel, the boot would be tickling tonsils. Boring, predictable, and shouting down anyone who disagrees.

Without being an expert on the Spanish Civil War in general, the idea that Guernica was a "legitimate target" because of the reasons listed in that thread kinda sidesteps the fact that the Civil War was a fascist coup attempt in the first place. If you're only studying the Spanish Civil War from the point of view of military history Guernica might've been a legitimate target (I wouldn't know one way or another, I haven't studied it), but Franco and friends started the civil war in the first place. It's kinda like arguing that the Blitz was legitimate because London was an important military target while ignoring that Germany was waging a war if aggression.
As a side-note, self-referencing instead of referring to what sources one used is poor form at best.

Same situation in Ukraine currently- blowing the Dniepro dam may be an effective military strategy for Russia, for example, but it is a Russian warcrime in part because the whole war is a Russian warcrime. Sells less books though...

Self-referencing is perfectly fine - assuming the original publication is itself reputable...
