Likely one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. But only because it elicited such a visceral reaction from me.
If you could watch and appreciate movies such as Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream", then you may very well appreciate this film on some level. If you did not, the you should stay further away from The Act of Killing than you should the other two. Mostly because those were works of fiction even if told in a very realistic and compelling manner. This is not a feel good documentary.
The Act of Killing is quite literally unprecedented. You will not have seen another like it, and I hope to god that we never do again.
It is easy to begin watching this and wonder why the hell this was even made in the first place. It seems to glorify evil. But as the film continues, you start to realize that this is more than such a simple concept. It causes considerable internal introspection regarding how inhumane we are all capable of being.
