Since there are quite a few comic books experts here, I pose this question: What graphic novel would you use to introduce someone to the X-Men and their origins. My kids watch the movies and ask all sorts of questions about the characters and their backstories etc and I would like to buy them some graphic novels instead of solely relying on the movies. Serves the dual purposes of getting them more into X-men, gaming, etc culture while also getting them to do more reading.

Hrmnn..."God Loves Man Kills" is sort of definitive (especially for the Claremont era) but kinda preachy...

What About X-Men First Class? Written more recently but hearkens back to their late 60s/early 70s origins...Ultimate X-Men was supposed to be a clean 'reboot' for new readers that still followed a lot of the origins, but it might be too different for your kids. New X-Men and Days of Futures Past are highly regarded (Morrison and Claremont, respectively).
Honestly, The X-titles have so much background and so many interwoven plots, it's really hard to follow as a casual fan. A buddy of mine has been collecting X titles for years and it's a JOB. You miss an issue here or there (especially tie-ins) and you're hopelessly lost...

Thanks for the ideas Yair. I can see how it's such a big diverse setting that it would be hard to choose anything truly definitive.
