Saw this somewhere else, thought I'd get y'all's opinions. I see it as a variation of the Trolley Problem.
You can cure covid immediately, worldwide. In exchange, Trump wins 2020 and we get another four years of him. Would you do it?
My answer is, I don't know. It sounds easy and right to say "cure the virus and damn the consequences", but what are those consequences? In the long run, how many people might suffer/die from what Trump has done so far and might continue to do?

I think it's an easy choice, but for the same reasons that make you unsure if it is an easy choice. Trump is the ONLY reason the virus is as bad as it is in the US. And in another 4 years, what other massive problems will he cause? What's the next disaster he'll make worse? In these last several years he's caused potentially irreparable damage to the US. He's made every other country despise the US, he's emboldened racists, bigots, and nazis, he's torn down regulation after regulation so he and his allies can make a quick buck and loot the country, he's the "most successful" person to have politicized whether or not you should wear a mask to flatten the curve, and increased voter suppression, caused thousands of people to die, and that's just what happened LAST WEEK. trump is more of a threat to both the US and what little world peace we have than a dozen coronaviruses. TL;DR Fuck trump, he's a piece of shit and so are all his followers. |

Honestly, that scenario requires a lot more context before I'd be willing to call it one way or another. What does "curing" entail, exactly? Does the virus just get wiped out immediately? Do we get a medicine that works against this particular strain? Can it come back later as a different mutation?

Trump is by no means the only person to politicized wearing a mask. He might be the highest profile, but PLENTY of fucksticks in the US and the world over have tried to float their political boat by stirring up weaponized fear and stupidity.

It really depends on a vaccine. But the unipolar moment is shifting regardless, hegemony is unsustainable in the long run. Its been shifting a while now. That said, for us lucky enough to live in Europe, that shift will be worse for the US than us, while the EU might even benefit in the long run. Trump is only hastening this, but its happening in our lifetime nevertheless.
Purely short term though. The Iraq War caused more deaths so far than the official toll for Covid-19, that was a single action taken by a president causing that. If a vaccine is effective and rolled out in 2021, Trump can do an equal amount of short term damage with 4 more years, he almost went at Iran. And lets face it, a decent chunk of the Covid-19 death toll is precisely because of Trump being president, so I feel that should count against him more than the virus itself...

I just really really want him gone. His incompetence and fuckery is just super inconveniencing me right now. Got a new car and selling the old, but because of a screw up with moving and mailing addresses I never got the title for my old car. Well that’s annoying, let me run down to the county office and get that reissued. Oh, the county offices are closed because he fucked up the pandemic response. Gotta do it by mail. Filled out and dropped off the form. Took a full week for me to get a reply back that I was missing one document required because he’s been fucking over the usps. Been waiting two weeks for the missing paper I need from the dealers finance department because of those postal delays caused by his fuckery.
Like, this next election is going to be a shit show. Expect few polling places with Huge lines. If you’re able to jump thru the hoops and do a mail in ballet, better get it in early because there’s going to Huge delays there too. It’s going to be Ugly.
