They still maintain a garrison there. Yeah, a what, thirty thousand man garrison? I suppose the way the Russian army is, that might be 'merely' a garrison.

Ah, winston beat me to it. I'm gonna say that this is a real problem. I mean, the actual incident is a total clusterfuck, but this is a potentially very bad diplomatic incident.

Reported now that a Syrian S-200 shot it down whilst trying to defend against an incoming Israeli airstrike, apparently the Israelis only gave a minute notification to the Russians of the attack.

It sounds like they were using the Russian Jet's radar signature as cover...

I for one welcome my new sword-distributing overlady.
Bonus points for being named Saga; makes the chuckle that little extra funny.

Surprised there has been no mention of the Khashoggi incident here. For those not aware stalwart Ally of the West and all round good people, the not at all mass murdering dictatorship of Saudi Arabia lured dissident Khashoggi to their embassy in Turkey where they tortured an murdered him, apparently chopping him into 15 pieces in order to remove the body.
The Saudis say his death was a 'mistake'... With the leader of the free world, the great Orange one, saying the Suaids are innocent until proven guilty and the rest of the world is pretty horrified.

It's definitely a pretty messed up situation. In some ways it's hard to believe they actually did that...but I'm also not super surprised. I wonder if they actually thought they'd get away with it though. Or if they even care about getting away with it or not.

Why would they not get away with it? They are the worlds largest oil exporters and a massive importer of arms from the US apparently to the tune of $110b per annum. Most of the world will shake their heads and tut, the Iranians will see it as some nice propaganda, Turkey will be a bit pissy and nothing at all will actually happen. Though I have to say fair fucks to Lindsey Graham who has been an apologist for the regime for ages and this time he has had the balls to actually criticize them (especially the CP who he said had to go). The G7 have said that there must be an open investigation into the case but that's as likely as the Turks/Americans/UK admitting they have bugged the Saudi Consulate.

Well, Trump says that he absolutely believes that Saudi Arabia had nothing to do with it, and then the Saudis admit they had something to do with it.
