The problem might be that the common striker can't outlast the big studios, because money is just numbers to them. F.e. Warner Brothers is 50 billion in debt and trucking along just fine, what's a little more debt to outlast a strike? Meanwhile if the striker doesn't have income, they don't have a roof over their head or food. This is why strikes against goverments routinely fare worse than strikes against private entities. Governments can eat the financial losses much easier. Depends entirely on the industry. Public Work Strikes are about bending a government over the bench of public opinion, by hopefully not making obviously outrageous demands, and waiting for General Public* to have enough and demand some deal be struck. Hence Unions typically start with a high demand, and haggled downwards. *Of course, on account of multiple recent charges of Gross Incompetence, General Public in in the process of being busted down to mere Private Public.

Also, some government workers (like me) can't actually strike or do anything like a strike...

Another UK high-street chain has folded, this time it's Wilko. I guess that's something like Target - they sell a bit of everything, cosmetics, candy, DIY and homeware stuff. They were one of the more "up market" of the discount homeware places, and it's a shame because I quite liked it though I have to admit I don't have any real need or opportunity to spend much money with them.
I'm sure some of the sites will be bought out by something equivalent, but the high streets are getting more grim by the month.

But.... the Wilkinson have been pulling money out of the business for years - they probably knew this day was coming since sometime during COVID. The investment packages are failing as the investors want to 'do an Ashley' and pick up any assets for a song without the attached liabilities. So it's more of a tragedy, a crime. And the high streets are already creaking under the weight of discount-Woolworths-wannabes. Here's hoping, something, anything, can be cobbled together for the workers....

I've seen a few posts from similar chains offering jobs to the workers, but I'm sure they're going to get nothing from the administrators.

Is it a sign of the "hollowing out" of the UK Middle Class?
*= Whatever the "Middle Class" even is?

I'm not sure what the UK Middle Class is anymore, but I'd have thought Wilko was aimed at the poorer classes, they do (did) a lot of no-frills own brand type stuff. Marketed slightly higher than the pound shops but somewhere alongside The Range, B&M or Home Bargains.

The Teamsters ratified their deal with UPS. Strike averted!
