Looking over the other Wasteland ETC forums and its giving off a distinct feeling of a ship burning down to the waterline, slowly drifting out of control. If we're guessing Dakka users, I would like to posit that Manchu has alternative accounts on Dakka, his attitudes towards moderation and his own behaviour seem to explain why certain parts of the boards (such as geek media) are still such shitholes of poop flinging monkeys. Probably not though, but it would be funny if it turned out to be true. ETC isn't really much like this place at all. It isn't even close to what it was, and what it is now is basically one ridiculous thread. Most of the members appear to at least be making an effort to have semi-reasonable conversations over at ETC. |

Not for much longer if the "no mods, no gods" group has their way tbf. I don't think that's likely though, as RiTides has already acknowledged he needs more moderation than what dakka has. And honestly, it feels like a bullet was dodged with Manchu refusing a mod position.

I'm pretty sure RiTides is going to go forward with the mod election idea. The number of people advocating for no or minimal moderation was significantly smaller that those advocating for more moderation. And even if Manchu hadn't refused a mod position, he would be one of several when it's all said and done.
And the lack of moderation isn't the only thing that gave this place its unique character. It was one factor, but certainly not the only one. I do think the desire for more moderation is a bit overblown in practice, especially in a community as small as ETC (and this place) currently is, but I understand the concern and I'm willing to accept it if that's what everyone else feels like they need to maintain a reasonable level of comfort during discussions of potentially controversial issues.

One huge difference is the presence, or lack, of certain individuals. Here, Whembly (and a couple others) came on so strong so early that a lot of quality posters left before any discussions could mature. If ETC had been flooded by Prof Tann and Grey Em posts starting on day one, it would probably be just like this place by now. ETC got lucky that enough posters got involved in enough threads to maintain interest even when shitposters derail things again and again.

Main difference is that ETC had the actual backing of Dakka mods, which enabled more users to find it. Also about making an effort, that same effort was made here in the beginning. But that gets destroyed by the 'circlejerk' Grey Eminence is so kindly displaying on the ETC now: "transgender people are mentally ill/biology!" *tons of rebuttal* "ok, but they're mentally ill right/biology". This has now restarted for the third time. What's the chance that people will still semi-reasonably respond in 6 months with the 10th iteration on the exact same bigoted argument? |
