The “like” button is a nice touch. I suppose the extra bit of motivation that comes from knowing people “like” one’s posts helps keep posters from abandoning threads as quickly as they might otherwise.

I kind of hate the comment feature though. It’s annoying when you hit the latest post button and it takes you to a new comment someone added to someone’s post five pages from the end of the thread and now you have to find the actual new posts manually.

But it never does this for a comment someone added to address one of your posts. It only works when it’s inconvenient.

not everyone who doesn't 'get' transgenderism, even after multiple explanations, is a bigot. Some people are just really, really, really stupid. And you can not get transgenderism without calling it the product of mental derangement. Someone who just doesn't get it doesn't say those kinds of things. Someone who goes in like that as a starter has already made up their mind to not get it and doesn't really care. They're in fact proud of not getting it and wear that ignorance like a badge of honor.
That's what takes this weird paradigm and makes it frustrating. This constant conflation of people who are just assholes with people who are just ignorant and don't know any better. They're not the same thing. It reads like clutching pearls more than anything.

That's what I don't get. Weird decisions It's because they want to naively believe that people like grey can have their minds changed over the internet, despite their interactions with them. I think you're overplaying the level of naivety involved. Just because you haven't experienced someone having their mind changed, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It also seems somewhat odd to me that on the one hand, you advocate for more moderation, which I assume is because you expect that most of the members on ETC will take the discussion seriously enough, and the discussion will be impactful enough, that members will become emotionally affected if the conversation isn't kept civil via moderation (which is a point of view that I understand and have some sympathy for even if I don't fully agree), but on the other hand, you don't think anyone will take the discussion seriously enough to actually change their point of view on anything meaningful. I do get the sense that I am probably more optimistic about that kind of thing and you seem to be more pessimistic, which is fine. That might be why our views on the subject seem to clash somewhat. Would you agree, or am I mischaracterizing your point of view on this? It's not my intent to do so - I'm trying to understand where you're coming from and that's the impression I'm getting currently.

I think the majority of people will take it seriously, but the minority who do not will drag discussions down consistently. I also think that while some people are up to have their views challenged and changed, some do not and just want to shitpost basically. QAR and grey have both proven that pretty well, as has Manchu on certain subjects. Beyond specific people, dakka alone has proven it only takes one or two people to ruin any sort of discussion on a topic.

Fuck me dead. How likely is that to pass in Tennessee, and that sort of thing would get referred to the SC right? Seems pretty anti-... Well, a lot

While the GQP is promoting their right-wing ideals on nazi-rune stages while worshipping a golden idol of their white savior, Germany has gone ahead and placed the AfD on the official watchlist of extremist groups.
I've been slowly checking out of US politics, I don't think there is much chance of salvaging what is left of our country here. I did get my new employment contract signed for my new job in Germany, so we are moving in September. At this point, it seems like that is the best option for my family.

Hey D! Glad to hear you're all sorted for your work to move to Germany. It does sound like the right move for you and your family.
Hope it all goes well for you and if you're ever in the UK (especially if you're over Bristol/Cardiff way), let me know somehow (either on here or dakka) 'cause I'd like to buy you a drink.

That point where Germany is the place to go to get away from crypto-fascist right wingers.
"this is fine" indeed XD

Germany already has that achievement, they're going for a "democracy only" playthrough this time around.
