I considered volunteering for the job, but I don't think it's going to be a good investment of my time and mental health. It's bad enough having to skip over a few responses in there, never mind actually having to examine those particular world views for something that is 'actionable' as opposed to just 'objectively awful' Same. It's just not worth it to me. Either I spend all my time trying to make the place better only to be hated for it, or I achieve nothing and it's all really just a waste. So why bother?
Suppose thinking about it gave a new perspective on being a mod on Dakka who just wants to do toy soldier stuff and doesn't want to deal with all this crap. In the end though I just don't have enough faith to feel like I won't inevitably regret trying so I'm not going to try. If people can't even get a basic agreement on what kind of conduct is beyond the pale (and it really feels like the forced choice some people are compelled to make is all or nothing), there's a fundamental and probably irreconcilable divide over what constitutes a healthy space. I'm not wasting my time butting my head against an impossibly vague and unworkable difference.

I think there are enough of us that we could feasibly vote in an entire mod team to effectively outlaw bigotry there. I'm willing to forgo posting there often and be a mod (which I'm sure will be viewed at the very least as an occasional blessing) the more I think about it if there are more willing to engage in this conspiracy to overthrow RiTides. I know dread has already thrown their hat into the ring iirc, so there'd only need to be one more AFAIK. Edit: I forgot, malus already volunteered too, as has Skyth. |

Baron is really steering hard right isn't he? Not letting in bigotry is just an ttempt to use a loaded word to create an echo chamber and silence dissenting opinions? Did the cancel culture debate here push one button too many? This is crazy.
Stigmatizing entire (marginalized) groups like the transgender community as mentally ill seems to be a textbook example of bigotry. Is he just low key voicing support? And he wants to admin?
Also, he is now openly using 'echo chamber' as a bogeyman to sway RiTides, that didn't take long.
Edit: my bingo card is doing very well today, thank you QAR for coming in with a "people who accuse others of bigotry are the true bigots". Its starting to feel a lot like Dakka home.

Yeah, and that sort of thing will sway RiTides way more than "but this sort of shit is what drives people who are already in high suicide risk parts of society to suicide when they see it" will. Which I guess illustrates what he wants from the site

It's sad how easily RiTides is swayed by them. RiTides already admitted that the quality of discussion has gone down, but apparently doesn't want to examine why.

Its just a catch 22 though, vote them in and have shit moderation, don't vote them in and they all leave unless RiTides intervenes. HatofLords wrote something about it on Dakka along the lines of (paraphrasing) 'if they can't control the discussion, they see no point in staying'. Edit: found it |
