Penguin Random House and 5 authors are suing a Florida school board over book bans

A new federal lawsuit alleges that recent decisions by officials in a Florida county to ban and restrict access to books in school libraries violates constitutional rights to free speech and equal protection under the law.

Over the past year, officials in western Florida's Escambia County have banned more than a dozen books in the county school district's libraries and classrooms in response to a wave of challenges by conservative teachers and parents.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, alleges that school officials acted in defiance of existing policies and a review board's recommendations when they removed books, and that the removals have disproportionately affected books that address racism and LGBTQ relationships.

The only thing that has even remotely been effective against "The Big Lie" has been law suits. Hopefully, this can do the same on the Book Banning wave going on across the country.

I wish the article had interviewed some legal experts to estimate how likely it is for the lawsuit to succeed. Even so, going through the courts might take years, even if the lawsuit succeeds, what is to stop the state from setting up another law that takes years to fight.

Book bans are on the rise. Biden is naming a point person to address that

President Biden on Thursday will announce new actions to try to address discrimination against LGBTQI+ Americans — including the appointment of a new point person at the Education Department to address an increase in book bans.

"In too many parts of our country, LGBTQ Americans are being targeted for who they are, and that, simply put, is discrimination," said Neera Tanden, Biden's domestic policy adviser, on a call with reporters.

The book ban coordinator at the Education Department will make schools aware that book bans can violate federal civil rights laws if they create a hostile environment for students, Tanden said. "Book banning erodes our democracy, removes vital resources for student learning, and can contribute to stigma and isolation," she said.

Yeah, I'm assuming they are viewing the LGBT books as controlling the youth and thus queer folk are the real nazis, and that banning books is the answer to that.

Rather than the actual reality, where banning books is the sort of thing Hitler did to control youths.

The only time I’ve ever heard of anyone wanting to ban Orwell, it was conservatives for the sex scene with the old lady. I’ve never heard of any Jews wanting to ban his books. Is this like the classroom kitty litter shit, where you made something up to get outraged about?
