Tubby, thank you. A beer gut very much bought and paid for. But I’m also relatively tall, so I carry it well. And it’s nowt a few weeks in a gym couldn’t handle, provided I could be arsed. But now I’m 44, it is something I’ve been considering taking up again. Not in the “I want to live forever” sense. Just the “I wouldn’t mind a decent period of retirement, so need to think on that” sense.
On the other hand, I’ve a 12 year career of actively making the world a better place under my sizeable belt, and should be getting a promotion on 15 July. So it’s not as if my sense of self worth is bound to the opinions of others.
So rant. Rant on into that uncaring void, and enjoy the responses which amount to little more than a literary shrug.

72%? Jesus. I hope parents and relatives attempt to sue the state over it too. It won't bring their kids back but it seems hurting conservatives in the wallet is the only way to get to them.

Have you seen the Chappell Roan backlash? I don’t know if it should go here or in politics, but it’s something interesting to discuss.
If you don’t know who Chappell Roan is, she is a singer who just “won” the VMA’s, has at least half a dozen hit songs including HOTTOGO, aka “YMCA for lesbians”, who surrounds herself with drag queens and appropriated drag fashion, who says she defends trans people and has a huge LGBTQ+ fandom.
She released a couple of politics videos where explains that Both Side are Just As Bad. She also mispronounced Kamala. When the backlash started she doubled down, at first. Finally she came out and said she was voting for Kamala, but the damage may be done.
I don’t know whether this will kill her career or depress the vote of 10 million Gen Zer’s.
Apparently she spends a lot of time on TikTok…

She sounds fairly sensible to me. Acknowledges the difference between voting for someone and endorsing them, and says she will vote Democrat but that they're not perfect and won't just settle for what they're offering. I respect that.
My biggest take-away from it all is reinforcement that people are morons that can't cope with any sort of nuance, if she is actually facing any sort of backlash over this.

My understanding is that her “nuanced” take was after days of backlash from her interview with the Guardian and then her TikTok videos. She straight up “both sides”ed them to the Guardian. And her mispronouncing Kamala, while pretending to know enough to have a nuanced take, is pretty sus.
The bulk of her supporters are at risk for losing their rights if Trump wins, so they apparently expected more from her than “here’s why I’m not endorsing Kamala even though fine I’ll fucking vote for her, okay? It doesn’t matter much to me who wins.”

She wants more than the Democrats are offering. She has issues with both sides as both sides are too right-wing for her. She said in the same Guardian interview that the biggest issue for this election is trans rights, and encouraged her fans to actually think about the issues and vote intelligently. It sounds like the backlash all came from a Twitter site doing essentially what you've done and clipping out the 'problems on both sides' quote without any context and pillorying her with it.

She's an interesting case because she went from virtual obscurity to huge celebrity almost overnight, so doesn't have any experience of the PR side of things. As such there may be the odd foot-in-mouth comments but if she's clarified later I think that's ok.
There's definitely a lot of people that can't handle nuance but I'm not sure why. Lack of critical thinking? I'm not sure if/how we'd have been taught about nuance.

I blame a lot of it on people not reading recreationally, especially in their childhood. Printed media can take more time to develop more complex ideas, you need more of an attention span to read. Reading also helps build a more complex vocubulary which allows more complex ideas to be both expressed and understood.

That makes sense. If you never read beyond a headline you won't get to experience anything nuanced.
There's also a lot of subtlety in language that can be missed without exposure to it. Good vs great for example, can mean very different things.

Have not seen it, but prior to the Taylor endorsement Chapelle Roan was playing her cards pretty close to the chest. I am not sure what happened and why she chose now to bumble about in that swamp. No celebrity should unless you are all ready big enough where it won't matter.
