This is a compelling reminder of why state and local politics matter. Conservatives at the national level can do a lot of harm but there's a lot that can be done at lower levels to offset it.

Until the party of 'states rights' trample on states doing things that they don't like... That's the part where electing good people at the state and local level is so important. The federal government has fairly limited enforcement powers if the states don't want to comply, they mostly depend on respect for the rule of law and cooperation with local cops. If you're in a red state and the federal government bans trans people from existing the most important part of that is the federal government is not going to help you when the state/local government comes to arrest you. But if you're in a blue state and the state government responds by telling the federal government where it can shove that nonsense you're probably safe as long as you never go to a red state. That's why it's so vital that we elect state and local governments that don't just support protecting basic rights but that are willing to stand up to federal law and refuse to enforce it.

All politics is local.

I went to a local school board meeting about "Bathroom Policy" and it was Moral Panic and Othering all over the place. Pretty much led by the same folks who led the Book Banners locally. It was ugly, and much more visceral and uncomfortable than the Book Banning meetings I went too. It reminded me more of those frothing COVID meetings.
Since my kid is no longer in the Public Education, it made me want to lock myself in my house for the next couple years and not leave.

Sadly it's always the wrong folk who want to hide away from society.
If you're scared a trans person might use a public restroom, then don't use public restrooms and let them take a dump in peace.

I hope Sarah responds insisting that everyone gets a medical check to determine which bathroom they should use. She should also start using the mens space and watch them squirm, because I'd love to see them complaining about a "biological man" usings the mens room.

The latter approach risks sexual assault though. Dangerous to be a trans woman in mens toilets.

And I think the results of the inspection need to be made public record just to be sure no republicans are attempting to break the gender rules.

She'd need to take some reasonable safety precautions anyway.

I'd probably use the disabled loos for a private cubicle.

I assume they'd count that as a win, by using that to infer she has acknowledged that being transgender a disability.
There's really no good solution here. But that's the point; they just want her to not use the public space by not being there at all.
