Also - I hate to be that guy, but I thought the Republicans were the party of personal responsibility? He fucked around with drugs and found out. Soz. That's a pretty messed up thing to say.
It is, but it's also the view of the party that's about to control the entire US Government, so it's arguably a mainstream and acceptable opinion now.

I don’t think it was out of order. Uncouth, sure. But factually accurate. It doesn’t matter who provided them, because the user bought it/smoked it - a choice and a matter of risk management purely their own, even if it was someone else passing the Dutchy by the left hand side. And with street drugs? That’s a well known risk. I can understand Whembly’s upset (if the story is true and not simply plucked from the Far Right Gobshites Big Book Of Conveniently Racist Lies) at the death. But shaking one’s fist uttering “Mexicaaaaaaans” misses the point entirely. Because its suggesting the sole source of illegal drugs is Mexico, which is bollocks. And nobody, absolutely nobody, is increasing the potency of their filth At No Extra Charge. Let alone with enough that a single joint is going to fucking kill you (outside of allergic reaction) I agree with you, but I don't think saying "but I thought the Republicans were the party of personal responsibility? It's also pretty unkind, frankly. |

I agree, but as context it's the exact same thing I see republicans saying about people struggling with addiction (and often homelessness/health problems/etc as a result): personal responsibility, don't do the crime if you can't do the time, etc. And that's the mild form, when it isn't blatant "just let that subhuman filth die in the streets". And while I don't have a specific quote of Whembly himself saying those things about cases he didn't have a personal connection to he has certainly aligned himself with the people who do. That's true, but not everyone feels that way (not even all republicans) and following up someone sharing a personal story of grief with a comment like "He fucked around with drugs and found out. Soz," is unnecessary, unhelpful, and pretty trashy. It's unnecessary and trashy when republicans do it too. Correctly pointing out that many republicans say that sort of thing doesn't make it better. |

Looks like voters under 30 saw a 13 percent shift from Democrat to Republican from 2020 to 2024. Hispanics had a 14 point shift, and in Wisconsin Blacks had a 14 point shift, with a full 22% of African Americans voting for Trump. Republican voting block is the most racially diverse it's been in over 5 decades.

I may be mistaken, but asylum* claimants are essentially kept in a detention center until approved or deported, and to claim asylum you're supposed to hand yourself in to the first available opportunity.
So people aren't just shouting asylum when caught miles from the border.
Most drug smuggling is also done with people who have US passports, because it's much easier.

Note his claim that they "cross the border illegally and simply claim asylum" when crossing the border to claim asylum is in fact legal immigration following well established laws for doing so. I think there needs to be a clear distinction between "cross the border illegally and simply claim asylum" and "crossing the border for asylum". There are indeed many individuals who cross illegally and claim asylum when they are in actuality here for economic/simple relocation purposes. Claiming asylum is just a way to create a beachhead for them.
